One day, when Callum acts up in school, Master Rufus explains why he chose him. As Callum bonds with Aaron and Tamara, he discovers that they feel the same way he does-they don’t know why they’ve been picked, and they don’t want to be there. His methods are strange and challenging-for example, he makes them separate individual grains of sand, which teaches them focus and determination. Master Rufus doesn’t train his apprentices the way the other mages do. At the Magisterium, however, no one cares about his limp-it’s his magic that matters.
